Essex Ave Flip: The Kitchen Before and Afters

The before photos are taking a while to load for us. Be patient!

It’s hard to believe the difference in these photos… I remember walking into this space the first time and just feeling overwhelmed by all that needed to be done. About six months later it’s done and completely livable now. I’ll walk you through some before and after photos (well, almost after, the cabinet knobs and pulls still have to go on).

When we redid the kitchen we replaced four of the windows and kept the rest. The two windows above the counters were replaced with smaller ones so we could still have plenty of light but get the counter height and space we needed.

We opted for no upper cabinets because we wanted the light and open look. We made sure to have plenty of cabinets so we knew that missing a few uppers wouldn’t be a big deal. We did place open shelves right around the sink and dishwasher for easy stacking of dishes and drinkware.

We decided to use a simple Shaker design for the cabinets, the look we were going for was beach cottage so we didn’t want anything too dressy. The counters are a dark gray honed granite called Icy Mist. Shockingly this was a remnant, even with the large amount we needed, the company had three slabs as left over from an enormous job they just installed.

Just look at this before photo of the same angle. Our end product isn’t perfect but I can’t keep staring at the difference between these two photos. It’s now liveable and welcoming.

The room is so narrow, and AJ didn’t want to make another window smaller, so we opted instead of the counter making a U shape, to set up a coffee bar area next to the fridge on this wall.

One more view of the little coffee bar area:

SOURCES (some affiliate links are below at no additional cost to you):

All appliances: Samsung from Lowe’s and Home Depot (we went with Samsung because they had a counter depth fridge that was the design we wanted at a price we wanted and I will only buy appliances from the same brand after purchasing two different brands for our last house and finding out that there was a big variety in the stainless steel color from competing brands)

Cabinets and stainless undermount sink: Building Supply Outlet, Peabody, MA

Counters: Honed Gray Granite || Icy Mist from North Shore Marble and Granite in Peabody, MA (second time we’ve used them and they are great!)

Floors: NTP Hardwood (I liked them so much I just hired them for another job!)

Shelving: made from stair treads and corbels from Home Depot

Mugs: Pottery Barn (these are at the flip but I kept my fave mugs home with us)

Mug Rack: World Market

Glass Canisters: Christmas Tree Shops (similar HERE)

Wood Cutting Boards: Amazon and Home Goods

Bar Stools: Marshalls (similar HERE)

Jute Rug: Rugs USA
